Building a Fully Bilingual Website for Elegant Audio

Elegant Audio is my recording and live sound business here in Sedalia, which means this site had a client who was impossible to argue with and impossible to bill. It also gave me a chance to solve a problem properly: building a site that is genuinely bilingual rather than one that has a translate button stapled to the corner.

Why Two Languages

A large part of the wedding work in this area comes through the Slavic community. The person booking is often planning the wedding alongside parents who are far more comfortable reading Russian than English. If the site only speaks English, you have quietly told half the decision makers that this was not built with them in mind.

That is not a translation problem. It is a respect problem, and the fix is not a browser plugin that mangles your headline into something that reads like a manual for a washing machine.

Doing It Properly

Every piece of copy on the site exists in both languages, written rather than machine translated. The language toggle sits in the main navigation where you can find it without hunting, and switching keeps you on the page you were already reading instead of dumping you back at the homepage, which is the single most common way language switchers get built wrong.

A few things that mattered more than expected:

  • Russian text runs longer than English. Roughly 10 to 15 percent longer for the same meaning. Buttons and headings that fit perfectly in English will break in Russian if you size them to the English text and hope.
  • The typography has to hold up in Cyrillic. Plenty of display fonts have a beautiful Latin set and a Cyrillic set that looks like an afterthought. That gets checked before the font gets chosen, not after.
  • Wedding vocabulary does not translate literally. Some of the phrasing had to be rewritten rather than translated, because the direct equivalent is technically correct and sounds nothing like how anyone actually speaks.

The Design

Wedding work is emotional and the design had to carry that without getting precious about it. Serif headlines, a warm neutral palette, and a lot of breathing room. The hero says what the business does in six words and then gets out of the way.

The rest is a clear service breakdown and a quote request. Nobody books a wedding sound engineer from a homepage. They book after they have understood what they are getting, so the job of the site is to answer questions in order and then make asking easy.

What It Costs to Go Bilingual

Honestly, less than people expect on the build and more than people expect on the content. The engineering side of a second language is a solved problem. The expensive part is that every future edit is now two edits, and every new page is two pages.

Which is worth saying plainly to anyone considering it: if you are not going to maintain the second language, do not launch it. A half updated Russian version is worse than an English only site, because now you look careless in two languages instead of complete in one.
